"As a painter one of my goals is to portray people, especially Black women, in a manner that captures the sweet spot between being totally relatable and surreally divine. I want to show the depth and breadth of our divergent experiences so that people can worship, admire, and be inspired by our beauty."

 About Our Mission...

remove the velvet rope

Our mission is to make fine art and literature centering Black people more accessible and commonplace. Our unique offering is that we remove the velvet rope and expand possibility
by bringing Black fine art and literature to the everyday experience through clothing, accessories, home decor, and other household items.

ABOUT OUR MISSION

In honor of Black History Month, a woman humorously posted on Twitter an image of a once-popular comforter with the caption "Happy Black History Month!!!" and so many of us recognized it! The comforter was in many of our households during the 90s, and the sight of it invoked so much nostalgia. Many people responded to her Twitter thread with even more images of similar items that brought up childhood memories and spoke to their cultural connections and collective consciousness. From that Twitter thread, we gathered that household items are the tangible tools used to share our culture with the next generation. If it's true that "all the world is a stage," then household items are the props, and if we want to tell a story, or send a message, then we undoubtedly have to set the stage.

About Our Values...

WHAT's In A Name?

Glyph and Proverb got it's name because we wanted to highlight important communication tools we use to convey cultural values and connect community.
The word "Glyph" is representative of pictorial messaging, and "Proverb" means short pithy saying in general use, stating a general truth.

ABOUT OUR VALUES
Paint Brushes

So now that you know Glyph & Proverb got its name as a representation of cultural communication tools, you might want to know what we are trying to communicate. What values do we want to promote and what exactly are we trying to say? The truth is we have many ideals that we strive towards but the foundational message that we want to convey to our people is simple; "Mo yin ra mi!" It is a Yoruba expression that translates to "I praise myself." It is an affirmation and reminder that we are glorious and worthy of adoration, honor, and praise but more importantly that we are capable of cultivating and sustaining our own positive self-image. Self-love is our message. We have dedicated our efforts to praising the collective self.
